Treatment

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery or eye bag removal, is a procedure designed to rejuvenate the upper and/or lower eyelids. By removing excess skin and addressing puffiness caused by protruding fat, blepharoplasty can create a fresher, brighter, and more youthful appearance while maintaining your natural facial features.

The delicate skin around the eyes is often one of the first areas to show signs of ageing. Over time, skin laxity, gravity, and genetics can contribute to hooded upper eyelids, under-eye bags, and a tired appearance.

Introduction

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation at Harpenden Medical. Dr Marsh will review your medical history, discuss your concerns and goals, and assess whether blepharoplasty is the right option for you.

A personalised treatment plan will then be created to achieve natural-looking, balanced results.

Benefits of Blepharoplasty

Upper Eyelid Surgery

  • Creates a brighter, more open appearance
  • Reduces hooding and heaviness
  • Improves eyelid definition
  • Can improve peripheral vision when excess skin obstructs the visual field

Lower Eyelid Surgery

  • Reduces under-eye bags and puffiness
  • Smooths the under-eye area
  • Improves skin laxity and fine lines
  • Restores a fresher, less tired appearance

The Procedure

Blepharoplasty is performed as a day-case procedure, usually under local anaesthetic, and typically takes between 1–3 hours depending on the areas being treated.

For upper eyelids, incisions are hidden within the natural eyelid crease. For lower eyelids, incisions are placed either just below the lash line or inside the eyelid, leaving little to no visible scarring.

Questions
You May Have

Will there be visible scars?

Incisions are carefully placed within natural eyelid creases or inside the eyelid where possible, meaning scars are typically very discreet once healed.

Is the procedure painful?

Most patients experience only mild discomfort, swelling, and tightness after surgery, which can usually be managed with simple pain relief.

How long do the results last?

Results are long-lasting and can provide a more refreshed appearance for many years, although the natural ageing process will continue.

Can blepharoplasty improve vision?

In some cases, upper eyelid surgery can improve peripheral vision when excess skin is obstructing the visual field.
