Condition

Teenage Skin

Spots, acne and oily skin are associated with the teenage years. Changes in hormone levels during puberty cause changes in the skin. Teenage skin clears in most people as they grow older, but for some, the problems persist into adulthood.

Information on Teenage Skin

Acne is a condition that occurs when hair follicles become blocked with excess oil and dead skin cells. This results in whiteheads, blackheads, pus-filled spots and cysts, which cause inflammation of the skin and feel painful to the touch. When cysts rupture they can damage the surrounding skin which sometimes leads to scarring.

Oily skin is a skin type that results from the sebaceous glands producing more oil than the skin needs to stay lubricated. It can be caused by over-washing, as the sebaceous glands are forced to produce more oil to replace that which was washed away.

Various over-the-counter and cosmetic treatments offer ways to reduce the symptoms of teenage skin.
