Wrinkles are folds or ridges in the skin which usually appear with age. The major cause of wrinkles that appear on the forehead is the activity of the frontalis muscle which elevates the eyebrows. As the eyebrows move upwards, wrinkles in the skin form on the forehead. The muscle around the eye, called the orbicularis oculi, can also cause forehead wrinkles and eyebrow lines as it closes.
As well as repetitive movements, a loss of collagen and elastin can cause wrinkles. Collagen is responsible for the skin’s strength and firmness, while elastin gives it its elasticity. With age, their levels deplete, the skin loses volume and wrinkles appear.
Wrinkles are a natural part of the ageing process and do not cause health issues. However, some people choose to combat wrinkles and other signs of ageing by undergoing aesthetic treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, or dermal fillers for deeper wrinkles. Some laser treatments are also effective in the treatment of forehead wrinkles.
