Vertical lip lines or wrinkles that form around the lips are commonly referred to as smoker’s lines. Although they are not always caused by smoking, the repetitive pursing of the lips associated with drawing in cigarette smoke gave the lines their nickname. Smoker’s lines surrounding the lips are caused by a variety of factors, including age, genetics, repetitive movements, as well as the most obvious – smoking.
As we age, the levels of collagen and elastin in the skin naturally deplete. These proteins are responsible for the skin’s strength, elasticity and plumpness. As the skin loses volume, fine lines and wrinkles appear.
People whose families had deep smoker’s lines may find that they do too. This is not guaranteed, but genetics play a part in the development of wrinkles.
People who have severe smoker’s lines often seek to reduce their appearance. Several cosmetic procedures, such as dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections and laser treatments can be effective.
