Hyperhidrosis is a condition of excessive sweating. It can affect the whole body (generalised hyperhidrosis) but is more often localised to certain areas such as the underarms, hands and feet (focal hyperhidrosis). Many who suffer from the condition sweat for nearly the entire time they are awake, causing them to avoid certain work or social situations.
Loose-fitting clothing can minimise signs of sweating and using strong antiperspirants instead of deodorant is recommended. Neurologic and infectious diseases can sometimes trigger hyperhidrosis, but in most cases, excess sweating targets healthy people, its cause unknown. There is no obvious cause for hyperhidrosis, however, some treatments such as botulinum toxin injections have proved effective in relieving its symptoms.
