Cellulite is the term for lumpy, dimpled skin. It results from an interaction between the connective tissue in the skin and the layer of fat that lies just below it. It typically affects women, mainly targeting the thighs and buttocks. Not only do hormones like oestrogen play a role in cellulite development, but also the fat cells and connective tissue below the skin are arranged vertically in women. This means that fat cells can protrude into the layer of skin, giving cellulite its famous ‘orange peel’ look.
Other factors that play an important role in the development of cellulite include age, genetics, and diet and lifestyle. Although cellulite does not cause health problems, people often turn to cosmetic procedures to reduce the appearance of cellulite. These work by breaking up the bands of connective tissue under the skin’s surface.
