Nasolabial folds are the wrinkles that form from the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Everybody has them, but their severity can vary. Also referred to as smile lines, people who smile often or have a ‘big smile’ may have permanently deep creases running from the nose to mouth.
The natural ageing process causes a drop in the proteins collagen and elastin found in the skin. Over time, volume is lost in the cheeks, making the nasolabial folds appear deeper. The development of lines and wrinkles may also occur as a result of prolonged sun exposure as UV rays damage collagen and elastin.
Nasolabial lines do not cause any problems to health, but many people seek cosmetic procedures such as dermal fillers to reduce their appearance.
