What Are Dermal Fillers and How Do They Work?
Dermal fillers involve an injection.
A filler containing the natural substance ‘hyaluronic acid’ is injected into the designated area of the body. Hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the body and is responsible for the smoothness of the skin and skin repair. It also boosts the production of collagen. Collagen is a protein that is mainly found in the skin and is
responsible for firmness, elasticity and cell renewal. After the age of 30, its production gradually declines, leading to wrinkles and sagging.
Dermal fillers replace what age takes away by regenerating the natural substances of the skin. This is different to treatments such as Botox which reduce lines by suppressing muscle contraction.
Dermal fillers are not permanent. After a time, the collagen stimulating effects will wear off. This can vary based on the type and quantity of the filler and the area of the body injected, but dermal fillers typically last around 18 months. Ongoing treatments would maintain the results.
What is the Treatment Process?
Step one is to book onto a consultation. This will give you a chance to speak to one of our aesthetic specialists about any concerns you may have, and what results you are looking for. Everybody is unique and it is important to us that we design the best treatment plan for you.
The next step is often the most scary; the treatment itself. At Harpenden, we understand that a degree of nerves come with committing to a body modification, but we do our best to make the process as comfortable as possible. Remember that the effects of dermal fillers are not permanent, and if you are not happy with the results, modern fillers can be flushed out with an enzyme.
The injection itself is quick and an anaesthetic is used to numb the area. The results are instantaneous. There may be mild pain and swelling at worst, but these usually subside within 48 hours. There is no need for downtime after treatment, allowing you to go about your day as normal.
Treatments Offered at Harpenden, Hertfordshire:
Tear Troughs – Dermal fillers are administered via a cannula and used to restore lost volume beneath the eyes. Say goodbye to those heavy ‘eyes bags’ and embrace a rejuvenated, lively look.
Sculpted Cheeks – A naturally flatter cheekbone, weight loss or aging can cause the cheeks to look gaunt. Dermal fillers will plump up the cheek, contouring the face for a youthful appearance.
Jaw Enhancement – A weak chin or jaw can be enhanced through injections into specific areas, increasing length, width or projection. The shape of your face will be significantly altered without the need
for invasive surgery.
Full-face Filler Treatment – A combination of treatments is tailored specifically to you, targeting multiple signs of aging and balancing the dimensions of the face.
Hand Rejuvenation – Dermal fillers are used to add volume to thinning skin on the hands and the hollows between fingers. They say that the true signs of age can be found on the hands, but with this treatment, no-one will ever know.
Liquid Facelift/Non-surgical Facelift – Dermal fillers are used alongside anti-wrinkle injections to minimise lines and wrinkles and fill out sagging skin. Much more cost-effective than a traditional facelift, the liquid facelift also comes with minimal risks.

About Hertfordshire
Easily commutable from London, Hertfordshire is counted among the ‘Home Counties’ of South-East England. As of 2019, the county had a population of 1,184,365.
Hertfordshire boasts many renowned architectural sites and places of outstanding beauty. Hertford’s magistrates’ court building was created by historic British architect Robert Adam in 1789. The half-brother of William the Conqueror built Berkhamsted Castle, and Queen Elizabeth I lived in Hertford castle, originally Norman itself.
Many renowned organisations are based out of Hertfordshire, including Tesco, Mothercare, TK Maxx, and The National Lottery. The county was also the birthplace of significant names like Lewis Hamilton, Guy Ritchie, Elaine Page, Victoria Beckham and many others.
You may not know that Charles Blondin practised his famous Niagara Falls tightrope walk over Hertfordshire’s River Mimram, or that Sele Mill near Hertford was the first paper mill to open in the UK, dating back to 1488. Now you do.
